Sal del Mar was built in the late 1960s and renovated in the summer and fall of 2015. Our home away from home is located in the little town of Isabel Segunda on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, and overlooks Sea Glass Beach, the Bay of Mules, and the Strait of Vieques. With all-new doors and windows, appliances (refrigerator, washer/dryer, gas stove, and water heater), and interior furnishings, as well as updated plumbing and electrical systems, Sal del Mar is located within walking distance of the center of town (and just about everything else) in Isabel Segunda, also known as Isabel II, Isabel, “the pueblo”, or just “the town”.
The upstairs apartment comfortably sleeps two (three with ease; four in a pinch, but we don’t encourage it). The downstairs apartment is reserved for family use. Both feature large decks with a view of the Bay of Mules and the Strait of Vieques. We are less than a three-minute walk from Coqui Fire (call several days ahead for reservations) and about a six-minute walk from the ferry terminal and fish market. In between, you will find great restaurants, the bank, and grocery stores. Just up the street, there is also a panaderia (otherwise known as a bakery – two within walking distance), several art galleries, and the central plaza, just to name a few.
Sea Glass Beach is a short three-minute walk from Sal del Mar, where the warm waters of the Strait of Vieques await for a quick swim, a romantic sunset, or watching a dramatic rainstorm over the El Yunque rainforest on the island of Puerto Rico. Fort Conde de Mirasol, circa 1845, is within walking distance and offers sweeping views of Isabel, the Strait of Vieques, Culebra, and the El Yunque rainforest. The Punta Mulas Lighthouse is ten minutes away by foot (not often open, but still beautiful), and the Caribbean beaches, as well as the famous bioluminescent bay, are about fifteen minutes away by car or publico (taxi), just on the other side of the island. Our Caribbean beaches are virtually unspoiled, with very few amenities. Just think… no hot dog stands or t-shirt vendors, no soda pop machines, and no electricity or drinking water, either… just the wind and waves and sun and miles and miles of pristine Caribbean beaches. Oh, did I mention that pit toilets are also in short supply?
Our home is a simple Puerto Rican home in a traditional Puerto Rican neighborhood. We don’t have a sauna or a hot tub. There is no telephone or TV, although we do have the Internet. Sal del Mar’s simplicity and ideal location near the heart of Isabel, as well as its proximity to the warm waters of the Strait of Vieques and Caribbean Sea (the average seawater temperature ranges from a warm 78 degrees in February to a balmy 85 degrees in September), makes it the perfect place to relax for a week or two, or even longer.
Please let us know if you have any questions, and we hope you enjoy your stay at Sal del Mar!
